BEA HERE NOW | march 2011

Holy cow! All this eating that must be done is crazy. It’s no wonder it’s hard to find a loyal following in Houston when so many new establishments open on a monthly basis and old establishments get revamps. How can you pick just one? It would seem hard but realistically, consistency is what it all boils down to. Many establishments that shall remain nameless have been visited from recommendations raving about their fare and even after repeat visits, they still don’t make the line-up. By now, you should’ve figured a few that are on that list. From a café that I can’t shake, to a workout that leaves me shaking, these places are worthy of making you’re go-to list.

Shandy’s Café
5814 Memorial Dr. 713.426.2675  www.shandycafe.com/home.html
I know. This café keeps appearing in my list. They consistently impress me with the quality of dishes in a relaxed, casual setting. It’s this quality that keeps me coming back almost weekly. And a fascination to find that one “weak link” dish. No such luck yet. My newfound love is their Shrimp Fresca pasta – fettuccini is tossed in a creamy sun-dried tomato sauce with grilled shrimp, sautéed spinach and a bit of pesto garnish. The combination of flavors is inventive and delicious. Service is no-nonsense and fast for great tasting, great quality, freshly prepared food.
Washington Avenue Pilates

I never understood the Pilates craze – that is, until I took a class. My one-on-one sessions with my Pilates guru Hilary are something I look forward to weekly. I love the customization of my session for my specific weak areas; and her constant watching eye ensures I retain proper posture throughout movements, minimizing injury, maximizing results. It’s these slow, controlled movements, focusing on stabilizing the core, and constant methodic breathing that tones your body all in a light, airy, small studio minus the hullabaloo that comes with a large gym.
Freebirds
1923 Taylor St. 713.862.0080 www.freebirds.com
New to this burrito craze, finding a favorite might be daunting. From building your own to enormous sized burritos, your style is out there for the picking. I’m a veggie burrito kind of girl. With loads of protein in beans, the meat isn’t all necessary. Combine that with rice, chunks of bell pepper, tomato, guacamole and the making is delicious and not all that bad for you. The decent serving size helps as well. But then again, I’m more of a normal-size burrito kind of girl too.  Waste not, want not. One thing I will miss is their discontinued mac’n’chesse. Queso and elbow pasta married to form a spicy, creamy harmonious blend. Yum down to the last piece.
Junction Bar & Grill
160 W. Gray 713.523.7768 www.junctionbarandgrill.com
Located at the old wet spot, this bar is only getting better. At press time, they are finishing up work on their first balcony and hope to have the second one up by St. Patrick’s Day festivities. 40 TVs, in almost any viewing area possible, surround the expansive bar. Every sporting event you can think of is playing here. From football to UFC, it’s probably on here and that means it’s packed. Another perk: they’re dog-friendly.
Catalina Coffee Shop
2201 Washington Ave. 713.861.8448
www.catalinacoffeeshop.com
Do not be intimidated by this coffee shop. It might be the best cup of Joe you miss out on otherwise. The staff is helpful and they keep it pretty simple when it comes to the menu. Should you need to special order, they’re happy to oblige or explain to you why your “healthy” version might not be so good for you. Their goal is to learn as much about the art, science and quality of coffee before passing it on to us, the consumers. Not to mention it is the most beautiful cup of coffee I’ve seen. With hearts or designs swooped right in the foam; it’s almost too pretty to drink.  With a happy cup of coffee, it’s a great way to start your day.

BEA HERE NOW | february 2011

The new year has us all working out and eating right. And although we try to stick to the straight and narrow, it’s never good to deprive ourselves of indulgences. Otherwise, we crash and burn with a dreaded binger. Statistically speaking more than half of us will give up on these resolutions by May but some form of what you changed will stick. These small changes can turn into big habits. Anything from portion control to merely switching from sodas to water, doing some form of activity every day to changing snack options –  you don’t have to sacrifice your love of food to see change. From healthy options to indulgent, cheat day options, I tread into tasty waters to gratify your palette this month.

The Great Hype!
Latin Bites Café
1302 Nance St.  713.229.8369
www.latinbitescafe.com
Believe all the hype. This place is ALL that and so much more. Off the beaten path, Latin Bites Café is worth searching for. We are OBSESSED, yes, we, the whole office minus the veggie eaters (they have their own addiction in the form of their fettuccini), with the Lomo Saltado. It’s this Peruvian, Asian-style dish that is phenomenal. Every. Single. Time. Beef tenderloin chunks are sautéed with red onions, tomatoes, cilantro, soy sauce and garlic, served stir-fry style with Peruvian white rice and a Lincoln Log stack of fries. The quality of the meat is clean, it’s prepared to tenderness and, combined with the addictive rice, it’s heaven on a plate. I don’t dream or long for dishes normally – this one, let’s just say I’ve fed the need twice in week. A rarity.

We took the challenge and they passed! No, really. We didn’t actually take the challenge but we did have some Dominos delivered and we have to admit, all the revamping tastes really good. The dough tastes like bread and not doughy with hints of garlic, the sauce is a perfect blend of savory with a bit of sweetness. Inhaling a few pieces for the sake of research is no task at all. You’ll have to hold yourself back from having that one piece too many that puts you over the edge of stuffed.

One of the best cafes in town and I just discovered another delight worth trying. OK, two. Feeling rather healthy after a workout, the seared salmon with a pesto-like sauce, haricot verts and orzo is just what you need to kill the hunger pain but stay on the right, New Year, new you track. Feeling more adventurous, the shrimp and avocado salad is so much more than what the name says. The shrimp is grilled, hash marks present, and mixed with greens (tons) and avocado slices dressed in honey mustard. It’s a combo of textures and flavor that is just right for a light and delightful lunch.

This deep mahogany wood-covered bar with dark leather booths, bar tables and just the right hint of light is where I would imagine finding businessmen clinking ice cubes in their bourbon or whiskey after a long day of work. It should smell of leather. Some clientele was just that, men in suits with their beverage of choice on the patio. I’m more of a dirty martini girl. My dirty Sapphire martini was a perfect blend of gin, olive juice and just a coat of vermouth. Also spotted, PYTs and Montrose hipsters all under one antler chandelier co-existing in harmony. THE FIRST “HOLIDAY” IS HERE! HAPPY HALLOWEEN! UP TO THE BRIM IN DÉCOR AND HOLIDAY PARAPHERNALIA, TIME SEEMS TO MOVE IN FAST-FORWARD FROM HERE TO JANUARY. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

“Designer Burger” minus the $$$

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar-
2405 West Alabama St. | 713.520.5959
The bar burger menu is a steal and delicious! Is this really a surprise when they are one of the best steakhouses in town?! Being that it is a bar menu we’re discussing, it could’ve been a disaster but it’s worth every cent. The Prime Burger is pure decadence. A buttery bun sandwiches an equally buttery burger with peppered bacon and cheddar cheese. Served with mini wedge and their signature onion rings. Realistically, the mini wedge is more like garnish and you get a few onion rings leaving just the right amount of belly space to devour the entire burger. It’s really strategic. And it’s only $12. There’s also a vegetarian burger and a pescatarian friendly burger too, so all preferences are covered.

Chelsea Grill

OLD SCHOOL OPTION + HOMEMADE FLAVOR = COMFORT

Chelsea Grill
4621 Montrose Blvd. | 713.942.9857
Always a pleasant surprise, Chelsea Grill never skips a beat. The hummus is a favorite. Don’t forget to pick the mini green salad; the vinaigrette on it is divine. Their Buffalo meat loaf with mashed potatoes and green beans is a hearty serving of good ol’ comfort. Two generous slices of meatloaf are served atop a
mound of mashed potatoes with a bit of gravy and a side of char-grilled, crisp, green beans. Served
steaming, it’s enough to split for lunch and take half home for dinner. You’ll be delighted to have it twice
in one day.

District 7

LEAN, MEAN, BURGER MACHINE!

District 7
501 Pierce | 713.751.0660
Burger obsessed? Then you must try the BuffaloBurger. Fluffy square artisan bread sandwiches 6 ounces of buffalo meat (3% fat) with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and Dispread. The Dispread is the secret
here. (It comes on all the burgers so if Buffalo is not your thing, you have options.) This spread is like a
dressed-up mayo. It’s addictive. The fact that this burger is so lean takes out the guilt of eating one.
Served with a side of crispy steak fries, you can even indulge in some for once.

Yelapa

MEXICO LINDO Y BONITO!!!

Yelapa
2303 Richmond Ave. | 281.501.0391
After attending a Young At Heart event at Audi Momentum, food was calling. Conveniently located
next door, this was a no brainer. With Modelo Especials in a can for $3, a peanut and puffy wheel
mixture to munch on, mistaking you’re in Mexico is no hard feat. The Sevichey Tejano is a vibrant ceviche mix of tomato, avocado, lime, mango and jalapeño. It’s tangy, fresh, it’s big flavor. The Tacos Barbacoa are another intense flavor punch. Three corn tortillas are served with house smoked brisket, ghost mayo and pickled red peppers. The combo is spicy and tender. The spice is a creeper and lingers but it’s so good that ignoring it to eat another is just too easy.

Hello, Fall! The kids are back in school, football is back on the tube and (don’t freak out) the holidays are right around the corner. It’s the happiest (or most stressful) time of year. I couldn’t be more excited! The combination of joy and stress feeds the excitement. Along with the transitional weather, fall couldn’t be a more thrilling time of year. This month held a slew of discoveries. A bar along the bayou, a paper/gift gem, going “green,” a “dam” good spot and an event that’s going to be totally rad!

Oasis along the Bayou

Brenner’s Steakhouse on the Bayou, Blue Bar -
One Birdsall Street 713.868.4444 | www.brennerssteakhouse.com

Restaurant week is the best time to test out cuisine you might not otherwise try due to steep prices or routine. A set $35, three-course menu gives you a cross section of what the spot has to offer. Brenner’s on the Bayou bar, aka Blue Bar, sits along the edge of the bayou with a beautiful view of this natural wonder. The pre-set menu included chicken, steak and a north Atlantic salmon. I went with the house salad, filet mignon with cauliflower mash and haricots and the cheesecake. The picture is worth a thousand bites! Let’s just say that plate was pretty clean when I was done. For the first visit, it was an epiphany. This won’t be the last visit.

Paper, paper is so FUN! Paper is for everyone!

Paper Source- Highland Village,
4016 Westheimer Rd. 713.888.0418 www.paper-source.com

Sounds crazy. Craftiness isn’t synonymous with me but The Paper Source can make a believer (or Martha Stewart) out of anyone. From invites, to thank you cards, to specialty wrapping paper, to aprons, to stamps, to embossers, personalization has never looked so fun. You can even find great gifts for a hostess or loved one. Thinking holidays? Stocking stuffers galore here! I vow to never buy an invitation/thank you cards again now that I can make them!

Im so “hun-green”!

Ruggles Green CityCentre, 800 W. Sam Houston Pkwy. www.rugglesgreen.com

Green is the new black. It’s on their shirts and it should be in your life. Organic eats and healthy treats are what they serve plus a few tasty sweets. The pictures are remnants of my meal, apparently, I was hungrier than expected and devoured before taking them. The fish tacos are a mound of cabbage and lettuce served with grilled or fried fish, a sauce on top of corn tortillas. Love the options! The hummus is a favorite. Toasted pitas, sundried tomatoes and olives are served with a subtle hummus. It’s not too sweet or overly seasoned. The menu is filled with veggie friendly, gluten-free, organic and natural touches.

“Dam” good food

Beaver’s 2310 Decatur St. 713.864.2328 www.beavershouston.com

Oh, play on words! After the revamp, it’s my first time back. The Bar-bar is a dish I dream about. The fried pickles are not to be missed. Pickle spears, not slices (makes a HUGE difference) are tempura-like battered and served with chipotle ranch sauce. Delish! Even if some of the batter falls off, the pickle underneath is still a bit crunchy! A glass of bubbly here is served high-ball style. A girl’s dream! And if you are craving sweets, it is imperative you have the Beaver Balls. Fried brownies, peanut butter and white chocolate are served with the most delicious vanilla ice cream with little powder bits of extra peanut butter. It’s mind-blowing!

It’s, like, a totally rad party for, like, a totally great cause!

One of the perks (or drawbacks) of this position is getting to eat at all the fine establishments Houston has to offer, plus we get food or offers at the office weekly. A drawback if you’re dieting, a perk if you’re a foodie. And with all this eating comes the sacrifice of working in exercise time into my schedule. But being that I really enjoy food, I do the work so I can continue to enjoy and diminish the guilt or justify it. They’re interchangeable. Can I really feel guilt when I’m enjoying it so much? I don’t think so. I’d like to get to the Pearly Gates and not wonder what that spicy chicken sandwich tasted like. So this month, I indulged in that sandwich, some tasty BBQ, a chic French café plus a few surprises.

Je t’aime Paris ♥
Epicure Café

2005 West Gray Street, 713.520.6174 | www.epicure-café.com

This time of year reminds me of my trip to Paris last summer. I crave pain de chocolate, croque moinsuers and champagne – anything Parisian. Luckily, I can get some satisfaction at this bistro style café. At Epicure, I get a bit of the fare and the small café feeling. We ordered their ham and cheese quiche served with a Caesar salad, a croissant and some alfajors (obviously not French, but delicious) for dessert. I like to eat my bites of quiche with salad. They mix deliciously together. What’s not to love about a buttery croissant! And the alfajors are a wonderful treat that isn’t overwhelmingly sweet. Caramel is sandwiched in cookie and dusted with powdered sugar. Makes my teeth tingle just typing it! Definitely my go-to meal if I’m feeling nostalgic.

Eat More Chikin!
Chick-fil-A

www.chick-fil-a.com

And just when you thought they couldn’t get anymore delicious they introduce a new item to their menu. Something that hasn’t been done in years! Their leap into the spicy chicken sandwich world could not be any more appropriate. After all, this is the chicken Mecca of fast food! It’s a spicy that progresses as you eat the sandwich. At first, you’re like, no biggie; by the last bite, you’ve got a little perspiration on the cheeks. I like to add their Buffalo Sauce to kick it up a notch! A welcomed addition to an already stellar fast food menu. Now, if only we could get them to open up for a bit on Sundays…

It never gets old…
Goode Company BBQ

8911 Katy Freeway, 713.464.1901 | www.goodecompany.com

One of the beauties of living in Texas is our access to BBQ anytime we crave it. And for me, that’s often. Funny to think when I was younger I thought it was only available around Rodeo time. After a busy day of moving, we dropped in the I-10 location for lunch. It doesn’t get better than a lean chopped brisket sandwich, potato salad and coleslaw. Well, the loaded and stuffed baked potato isn’t a bad choice either! Extra sauce for dipping is a must. The food soaks it right up! The BBQ is smoky, it’s tender, it really hits the spot when a craving hits. I love Texas!

If you’re here, you can’t get enough of Tex-Mex!
Hugo’s Mexican Restaurant

600 Westheimer Road, 713.524.7744 | www.hugosrestaurant.net

I’m already partial to the margarita – it’s my favorite in town. Made with real lime juice minus the triple-sec makes all the difference in flavor. It’s refreshing rather than tart and lingering. Craving tacos al carbon, the waiter suggested these off the dinner menu: tacos bistec. From the lunch menu, these wood grilled hanger steak tacos are AWESOME! Served on blue corn tortillas with a bit of onions, rajas, pico de gallo and a side of guacamole and salsa, these tacos taste phenomenal. The meat with the crunch of fresh pico and rajas asadas with onions is the perfect complement to my favorite margarita.

SIP CODES | july 2010

Hello Summer! For the next 3 months, I expect nothing less than the excruciating heat and humidity that defines Houston summers. You know what I’m talking about, a layer of moisture instantly on your skin, car temperatures reading in the triple (insane) digits, so warm in your car you actually get goose bumps. These 3 months I’m willing to endure for our beautiful spring and fall seasons. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t want it any other way. These are the summers I remember from my childhood. Staying out until the sun went down, absorbing all the information that came my way via the neighborhood kids. The summer has a way to awaken my inner child. It’s like a rush of energy to get out there and explore while there’s still all this daylight left! This month, I discover innovative sushi, ultimate relaxation and authentic Tex-Mex that can’t be beat.

Sushi Rak-who?
Sushi Raku
3201 Louisiana St. 713.526.8885

After attempting to get in around their opening date, I finally waited out the masses to sneak in a taste of what the entire buzz has been about. Saturday night, Memorial Day weekend, the masses flee Houston for bodies of water. Their good fortune is my advantage. First off, the décor is insane. Red is the color of choice. The bar is draped and wrapped in this wild red rope installation. We opted for this area to dine rather than their dining room.

I immediately ordered their ebi mayo to start and the suggested beef tataki. Fried rock shrimp is served in a spicy yuzu mayonnaise. It’s AWESOME! I dream about this dish. The beef tataki is thinly sliced beef (think carpaccio) with shaved Parmesan slices, jalapeno, some arugula – all lightly dressed in combo that includes truffle oil. It was another stunner. The freshness and quality are unsurpassed.

And it was constant through the meal. Not full, we ordered the spicy tuna roll with a modification and the lady Hama. The spicy tuna had avocado, jalapeno, scallion and white sesame seeds. We modified adding peppered tuna sashimi pieces on top. Another suggestion. I was reeling and giddy from just how delicious everything was. It was slowly winning a place in my heart.

We finished with the lady Hama. Thinly sliced yellowtail is presented with white citrus soy, cilantro, jalapeno, blueberries and sea salt. This combo would’ve never occurred to work in my mind but amazingly it does! The sea salt burst in between the yellowtail, blueberry, bright cilantro and bite of the jalapeno is phenomenal.

I most definitely had dessert – the chocolate molten cake which needs 15 minutes to prepare. Cleaned that plate too! Although the service can be spotty (something they are working on), the quality and innovation is supreme.

My once-a-month indulgence…
Lifetime Spa
CityCentre 815 Town and Country Lane | 713.464.1200 | www.lifetimefitness.com

I’m not the type to get massages or regular manicures and pedicures. Half the reason is I don’t like people rubbing on me and the other half is I can polish my own nails. This all changed after my spa day at Lifetime Fitness. I still don’t get massages, but I do get regular facials. I can’t lie though, with my facial, I get a mini massage on my face, neck, arms and shoulders. Melissa, my facialist, is awesome! She recommends but never pushes treatments or products. We discuss my skin issues and see what we can do to minimize them. She also keeps track of my skin’s progress so I know I’m getting results. Not to mention, when you book a spa treatment, you can check out their fitness center for the day. And their amenities are not bad at all! The Spa is serene, dimly lit and comfortable. You have instant access from the ladies locker room where you are provided with a locker for your belongings and a Spa robe. It’s one indulgent thing that I’m happy I’ve found. Not only for my skin’s sake, but sanity. There’s nothing like escaping the real world for 90 minutes of pampering.

Tex-Mex. Often imitated but never replicated…
El Tiempo Cantina
1308 Montrose Blvd. | 713.807.8996 | www.eltiempocantina.com

My fiancé has been working in Puerto Rico for the last month. On his last visit to Houston, the first thing he wanted was a margarita and queso. He, along with me and a long list of traveling Houstonians I know, misses our outstanding Tex-Mex. And you don’t necessarily realize how good it is until you go elsewhere and are served a sham they call Tex-Mex or even Mexican! On a visit up north once, I was served “white queso.” Not Escalante’s white queso but white American cheese melted in a bowl. I was insulted. On another occasion in LA, I was served porridge-like tortilla soup. It shouldn’t have a thick consistency, folks. All of these low points made me realize we are truly spoiled. You can’t even find Velveeta or Rotel in other states to make queso! So our first stop after errands was here. Happy Hour. Ritas. Guacamole and queso. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

beaiamgeIf you haven’t noticed, the format is changing a bit to what I had hoped it would be a while back. Less editorial looking and scrapbookier. I’m working (really hard) on getting used to photographing my food and beverages before I down them. I’ll admit I’m a better writer than photographer and there’s something strange about shooting all the food you eat before you eat it. But don’t worry I’m not going to start a blog with documentation of my food. There are plenty of people filling that void for all of us. The pictures you will get to see this month document the comeback of a “titan” so to speak, a guilty (but popular) pleasure, and surprises from the sea.

After Ike decimated the structure with an inferno that lit up the dark sky on that nightmarish evening, they’re back and more beautiful than EVER. Still in the same location, various dining areas are fabulously decorated. The dining room boasts yellow oversized seating. The bar is a wonderland. I love the deer on the salmon colored fabric found on the chairs and the glow of the lighting overhead. And then there’s the courtyard. The iron seating and landscaping, with ivy climbing the walls, is quite magical. You might even catch a few birds bathing in the fountain. But I’m ABSOULTELY enamored with the room located on the second floor with latticed, mirrored walls and gold chivarri chairs with coral cushions. It’s pure perfection! One look and I was already mentally listing all the wedding events I still need to host just to use that space. Ladies, you’ll LOVE it. We sat outside (soaking in all the beautiful weather days that are left) in the courtyard to fete my brother’s birthday. Our service, from the moment I walked in, fiancé in hand (late, of course…) was phenomenal. I had the chopped salad to start and split the filet of Harris Ranch Black Angus Beef. My chopped salad with hearts of romaine, cane jelly glazed bacon, pressed egg and a Parmesan cheese straw came freshly tossed in a cayenne avocado dressing. The glazed bacon added a nice sweet touch to a savory mixture. A nice plump filet, pre-split, was served over Yukon Gold French potato puree with Bordeaux roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions and “barrel aged” Worcestershire. I love it when your split dish is served split.

Cupcakes and girls. I don’t know what it is but this cupcake shop has a cult following of…girls. Could it be its sweet, fluffy goodness? Or the colorful and cute mounds make a delicious “accessory”? My take, it’s all of the above. The cute white box or cup with their tiffany-blue, chic circular label has almost become a status symbol. Yeah, anyone can carry a Starbucks cup but a Crave cup is original. After a day of pulling for a photo shoot and a quick lunch at Uptown Sushi, I needed something sweet. Luckily, Crave is right down the street. With the hustle and bustle around (and in) the place, you would think they’re giving cupcakes away.  With all the cupcakes beautifully displayed and the glass partition separating you from several pastry chefs frosting or baking, you can get lost in a sugary lala land. Refusing to wait to be in the car to taste my vanilla/vanilla, I took a bite walking to the parking lot. Holy cow!!! They forgot to mention that it’s vanilla BEAN! That little detail makes all the difference. I should’ve ordered two! I suddenly felt like that kid – messy face, devouring sweets with mom telling me not to touch a thing in the car. Pure delight, sugar-high in effect! And the coffee, it’s delish – made on the spot, blazing hot. I see the obsession and you can consider me a fan.

The joy of sushi! Although pricy (worth every dollar) for such small morsels, it’s highly enjoyable. I learned this the hard way. After finding really decently priced, delicious sushi and having my eureka moment, my dreams were shattered with a bout of food poisoning. Not fun, people. Not fun. I stayed away from sushi for months! Literally, terrified of ever having to experience that again. Uptown is my sister’s favorite so I found myself back in my old haunt, cautiously anticipating our lunch order. With new items on the menu and still feeling apprehensive, I let her do the ordering. Ten minutes later, I’m table-covered in sushi heaven. The freshness is astounding. Any roll

Three reasons: it’s so close to me, they offer a variety of rolls in brown rice, and the prices are pretty reasonable. OK, four reasons – it’s pretty freaking good!

Oh my gosh! What have we done to the universe to deserve SUCH amazing spring weather! Because whatever it was, we need to keep on doing just that. I finally hit some patios and enjoyed crawfish. And believe me, there is no shortage of places for either! If you drive down Washington on a pretty Sunday the smell of spices permeates the air. New places are blooming like wildflowers. From champagne bars to sports bar to cupcake mobile bakeries, finding a place to eat or drink has never been easier. Or is it difficult with all the choices? You’ll never know unless you hit the pavement. I revisited some establishments to confirm my previous assessments, discovered a new gem, and found a way to enjoy an old pastime. All in a month’s work, folks!

On another one of my “moral” missions to prove deliciousness is constant – I dropped in for lunch on a beautiful Houston afternoon. They have a cute little patio right out front. We started with their wonderfully fresh hummus. Their pita rocks my socks off! It’s hot and straight from being toasted, so that yummy toasty smell still lingers. After scarfing the generous serving of hummus clean off the plate, we decided to split the grilled chicken club sandwich. Holy mother of Pete! This sandwich was AMAZING! I didn’t really know what to expect. I was thinking a typical club is cold, layers of unnecessary bread all cut into little triangles. What I was served was a toasted grilled chicken sandwich with mayo, Swiss cheese melted (acting like glue in a good way) with hickory smoked bacon and tomato in every bite. The sandwich comes with a mound of shoestring potato mixture (sweet potato and white) fries and a tiny pot of ketchup. By far, one of the most delicious sandwiches I’ve tasted in a long time. I’m craving one just writing about it!

I’m not sure how many times I’ve actually printed this statement but I’m SERIOUSLY excited about this bar. I went after dinner with my boyfriend to have a drink and ended up staying for a couple more. The outside is completely unassuming and kitschy. The outside Tiffany style lamps should be an indicator about what you are about to experience but until you actually go inside you really have no idea! Replicated Tiffany lamps adorn the entire ceiling and every crevice in between. The most romantic little orbs hanging from a ceiling I’ve ever seen. Vintage furniture rounds out the décor. Everything from couches and coffee tables to armoires are collectable pieces. There wasn’t one piece I didn’t want to take home with me. And apparently, I’m not the only one. Rumor has it a few lucky patrons have purchased a lamp to take home. While sipping on my vodka soda, I thought it would be great to hear some Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin in this space. And lo and behold, Wednesday nights is lounge night with Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. This place couldn’t be more perfect in my mind!

I am a believer! After going once already for a media tasting that was perfection, I needed to make sure, for myself, that they’re consistent. It’s this “moral” thing I have. On the hunt for a patio, we stopped in here for a bit before 5pm opening time on a Saturday night. They were more than welcome to let us come in and peruse the drink menu until they were set up outside for customers. The bartender taught me about bourbon and which one I’d probably enjoy. I took it to heart. Drinking bourbon on the rocks is something I plan on achieving one day. After settling in to the patio for a champagne sunset, our tummies were grumbling. We moved inside to the bar area to eat starting with a salmon tartar with crème fraiche and split their cheeseburger. (Note: Some menu items change so these might not be available when you go.) Our tartar was a little mound of fresh bits of salmon with hints of citrus and little toasted crostini for “dipping.” Our burger was served already split. The juiciest, cheesiest, most delish half with big steak fries was just what I needed to satisfy my hunger. In all honesty, I probably could’ve eaten the whole burger minus the fries. It’s that good.

I used to have this dilemma with moviegoing. I’m all for going to the movies during the week; there is nothing really to interrupt. But on my weekends, I can’t really sit there without thinking I’m missing something. And that something is a nice adult beverage in one hand to enjoy. Then these 3 theatres appeared in my life and things changed. In a matter of two weeks, I went to all three to enjoy a movie on a WEEKEND! All three vary in the level of comfort but one thing they all have in common: They serve adult beverages for consumption while you enjoy your movie. Pure genius! I must admit I feel very grown up going to dinner and a movie on Friday night.

SIP CODES | april 2010

Happy April! There will be nothing wedding related today, kids. I figured since it’s pretty much everywhere else, we’ll keep this strictly SIPCODE business. I can’t get enough of these beautiful sunny days we’ve been experiencing. It’s days like these that my mind draws a blank on restaurants that have patios. There’s still a slight chill in the air although the sun’s beams are sunburn-worthy so an umbrella option is a must. Learned about this in Galveston this past weekend when I got a really “cool” racer-back tan on the right side of my body. I didn’t experience much patio dining this month but I did discover some new gems, revisited an old favorite and learned what it’s like to watch movies luxe style. Enjoy this beautiful weather and see you next month!

Canopy

I LOVE brunch! And I have to admit, I can’t remember all the places that offer it. I wake up and want brunch. My only option is to hit the road and hope wherever I stop is still serving. Luckily, on this Saturday, Canopy caught my eye. The décor is very eco-chic. Sun beams in through the windows. A large wooden sculpture hangs overhead in the dining room and an enlarged photograph of a tree covers the wall behind the bar as well as a wall in the dining room. Wooden tables with green tops and wooden chairs add to the organic nature. All the tables outside were taken and it seemed the dining room was full as well, so we sat in a little table in the bar right by the window. This was as close to outside as we could get without a wait. I ordered the mushroom, goat cheese scramble and some of the artisan chocolate croissants made in house. The scramble came out first with fresh fruit and their crispy potatoes on the side. My scramble was perfect. The warmth of the eggs melted the cheese into every nook. Each bite with egg, mushroom, cheese and green onion (sprinkled on the top) was delicious. My 3 mini chocolate croissants arrived served atop a doily close to the end of my meal. Each crispy, warm bite was the “icing on the cake” to an already perfect meal.

ARCODORO-1

One of my old favorites never ceases to deliver. It has been a LONG time since I’ve been. Naturally, I have to order my favorite, the four cheese pasta! Thankfully a girlfriend of mine wanted to split it. Last thing I want to do is knock out a whole plate of this delicious goodness. Eaters remorse and food “coma” go hand in hand. We also split an arcodoro salad to add a bit of greens. Ever since I went to Paris last year, I have this habit of putting my salad on top of my pasta and eating it together. It doesn’t work with all pastas. Not an idea for spaghetti. This combo was ideal. I got to eat my cheesy yummy bow-tie pasta with a little bit of greens to make me feel like it was a healthier twist on one of their classics.

After catching a 7:40pm showing at Studio Movie Grill, we stopped in at their bar for a taste of their seafood delicacy. The dimly lit bar has lush booth seating and high bar seating with live piano bar music. Since we were a group of eight, we sat at a high bar table. After ordering a round of drinks we perused the menu. It was a little hard to read since the lighting was that dim. My sister, having been previously, suggested we order the “tower” instead of going through the whole menu. We ordered two to accommodate us all. The tower came with jumbo shrimp, oysters and crab claws on two tiers and fixings in the middle. They are not kidding when they say jumbo shrimp. They’re huge and “meaty.” It’s absolute perfection. We ordered some bread for extra stuffing. Served hot, we cut butter and slipped into each slice before tearing into it. I’m not an oyster fan unless they’re rockefeller, but the boy and girls cleaned up. Not one was left. It was the ideal amount of food after having some popcorn during the movie. If you don’t want to eat at the theatre (see below), save your appetite and drop in for some quality dining.

Speaking of movies, this is my new-found favorite way to watch movies. I love the comfort of being able to watch a movie, drink an adult beverage and dine all in one package. The comfortable seating isn’t a bad perk either. I wasn’t sold the first time I visited Studio Movie Grill but on this visit one feature in particular wowed me. Even before I got to the theatre. On their website you can purchase tickets and reserve your seating. It’s a feature called “adult weekend” when you click on the show times icon on the main page. The total for two tickets comes out to about $50 but included in that bundle are two vouchers for $12 toward your food and beverage. Not only do you get the voucher but you also get to pick your seats for the movie online and they are reserved for you the night of. No fighting for seats or waiting in lines when you get there. We waited at the bar and then cruised through the ropes with several minutes to spare to get to our seats and place orders before the lights went down. It’s ingenious for a movie night with friends or a date!

OK, I once again forgot to write an introduction. Is it because I stayed up after the Super Bowl watching reality (bad) television on VH1? Or is it the impending wedding I’m supposed to be planning looming in the back of my mind? I’m not going to lie, it’s everything. And I’m not a planner either. I don’t plan where I go to eat so I can write about it. I go eat and then, if the experience is good, I write about it! I have anxiety. I’m a leg shaker now. I’m usually the calm, collected type. Gone! Ever since I’ve had this task of planning. When it comes to trying to coordinate ceremony and reception venues, the date is the tricky part. I’m hoping by the time you have this in your hands, reading this rant of an intro, I have a date. And I can return to just eating and writing about it in peace.

I knew it wouldn’t be long before I converted someone over to Zoës’ “dark side” that they call the “gruben.” I call it the “dark side” because once you taste it, you’ll be addicted. I took my fiancé for lunch one day and he tried it; next thing you know, we’re back two days later for dinner per his suggestion. This delicious take on the Reuben sandwich is grilled turkey, swiss cheese, their famous slaw and spicy mustard served on rye for a mouth-watering concoction. Who am I kidding? It’s better than a Reuben! The cheese melts with the turkey and the lightly toasted bread warms the slaw which goes nicely with the spicy mustard. It’s no wonder it’s a Zoës’ favorite.
RA Sushi- Highland Village-3908 Westheimer Road 713.621.5800 www.rasushi.com
This sushi spot pleasantly surprises me with each visit. They’re very innovative with their sushi combination and creations. Each dish is paired with its own sauce. On this visit we were all about the new items on the menu. We started with the Kaisen Ceviche. Japanese-style cooked shrimp, scallops and squid chilled and mixed with fresh tomato, avocado salsa served in a spring roll shell. Fresh and full of citrus, this dish is simple but tasty. We also had to try the “RA chips and salsa.” The name alone intrigued me. Spicy tuna tartare is mixed with cucumber, avocado and fresh salsa and serves as the “salsa” in the middle of the bowl. Wonton chips surround the “salsa” for dipping. I love this concept! We got a hefty serving and of course, I had to eat it all! Feeling only a little bit room left, we delve into the Crispy Onion Albacore and Seared Tuna in the RA Tapas. These small plates of thinly sliced sashimi are a true testament to just how fresh your product must be to pull this off. Both served with micro greens, the seared albacore comes with a garlic ponzu sauce and is topped with crispy onions and wontons, while the seared tuna has a creamy soy dressing, topped with sesame seeds and Japanese rice cracker bits. The quality is consistent as well, we went back a week later to have the same meal and it was flawless.
W Grill- 4825 Washington Avenue 713.861.9933 www.wgrilltogo.com
This inconspicuous little drive-through spot is like a diamond in the rough. Since their revamp, they’ve focused on the food. Lately, I can’t get enough of their granola cup. For all you raisin-phobes, their granola is sans raisins. You can add fruit if you’d like. I usually get strawberries. (Mom would be so proud.) The key is the yogurt. I have no idea what kind of yogurt they use or the flavor but it’s awesome. Next time you’re looking for breakfast, drive thru and pick one up. They serve coffee as well so it really is a one-stop-shop.
Boheme- 307 Fairview @ Taft 713.529.1099 www.barboheme.com
Tucked away on Fairview and Taft next door to Dean’s, this quaint bar is at the intersection that’s become quite the friendly pedestrian area for the neighborhood. Dim lighting, mismatched vintage furniture, bottle chandeliers and art make for aesthetically pleasing pieces to look at while having a drink or snack. I’ve been a few times now and I still can’t manage to digest all the visual stimulation. With a plethora of beverages to choose from as well, it might be a while before I can wrap my head around those and share them with you. I’m getting back into sangria, keeping my fingers crossed for warm weather and sunny days so I can enjoy them on their patio. Fruitless, their sangria is just for drinking. No fruit bits to snack on in this one. Personally, I don’t like my fruit to be sangria soaked. Just a couple blocks from home, hanging out here is long overdue. Still, I’m excited for a “new” place that has a lot of character it almost feels like you’re in Europe. Oh, one can dream…
Honorable Mention:
Shandy’s Cafe- 5814 Memorial Drive 713.426.2675
This spot deserves an honorable mention because every time I visit the food and service is fantastic. I’m not talking “smiling hostess at the door waiting to greet you and brighten your day” fantastic. But I don’t need that, personally. That can be painful at lunch. They’re quick and attentive which is what I need at lunch. They’re consistent in quality, and it shows when the majority of customers are regulars. I even see the same faces again and again. The food is simple not fancy, but the quality is delicious.

RA Sushi- Highland Village-3908 Westheimer Road 713.621.5800 www.rasushi.com
Ra_Sushi_HoustonThis sushi spot pleasantly surprises me with each visit.

W Grill- 4825 Washington Avenue 713.861.9933 www.wgrilltogo.com
wgrillThis inconspicuous little drive-through spot is like a diamond in the rough.

Boheme- 307 Fairview @ Taft 713.529.1099 www.barboheme.com
bohemeoutsideTucked away on Fairview and Taft next door to Dean’s, this quaint bar is at the intersection that’s become quite the friendly pedestrian area for the neighborhood.
